How are Zirconia stones made?
Cubic zirconia is a type of synthetic stone made of zirconium oxide. These beautiful stones are often used in high-quality jewelry andearrings for both men and women. Unlike diamonds, which have a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, cubic zirconia has a hardness rating of 8.5-9.
This means they're resistant to scratches, cracks, and chipping, but may not hold up as well to daily wear and tear as diamonds. Read on to learn more about how these special stones are made.
The zirconia production process begins with the element zirconium. Zirconium occurs naturally but must be extracted from minerals like baddeleyite and zircon through a process known as thermal reduction. Once extracted, the zirconium is placed in an oxygen-free chamber and heated until it becomes a white powder known as zirconium oxide, or simply "zirc."
The cubic zirconia is then placed in a kiln and heated to even higher temperatures until it liquefies. Once liquid, it is poured into molds where it cools and solidifies into the familiar round or marquise shapes we see in fashion jewelry today. After the stones have cooled and been cut to size, they are ready to be set in your favorite piece!
Now that you know a little more about how cubic zirconia stones are made, we hope you'll appreciate them even more when you see them in stores or when others wear them. These beautiful stones are a great alternative to diamonds for those who want the look of diamonds without the high price tag – just make sure you take good care of them so they last a lifetime!

Cubic zirconia stones are less hard than diamonds and are therefore ideal for high-quality jewelry. Cubic zirconia stones are also very lightweight, making them easy to combine with other materials and incorporate into various jewelry designs.
Zirconia stones are also often used as birthstones in jewelry.
