All about birthstones

What are birthstones?

You've probably heard of birthstones and may even own one or more. Birthstones are incredibly popular. They have the most beautiful colors and look incredibly chic and elegant in jewelry. But what exactly are birthstones?

The origin of birthstones

Birthstones are a selection of different gemstones connected to the month in which you were born. Which stone belongs to which month is derived, among other things, from the story "Exodus" in the Bible. It describes how the high priest Aaron wore a breastplate with 12 different gemstones on it.

Later, these gemstones were linked to the zodiac signs – the stones were believed to provide extra power to the person wearing them during a specific period. Stories also appear in other religions, cultures, and medieval accounts describing how birthstones were worn in jewelry for protection, luck, and wisdom.

What does a birthstone do?

Today, birthstones are linked to the 12 months of the year. Just like in the Middle Ages, the gemstones are incorporated into jewelry, so you can always keep your birthstone close to you. The different gemstones each have their own unique set of properties. For example, one birthstone may contribute to creativity and expression, while another focuses more on strength and protection.
